First look at ASUS ZenFone 6: the front-end is no longer needed
One of the first to get acquainted with the ASUS ZenFone 6 just officially introduced. It is immediately noticeable that the frameless novelty is not trying to copy competitors, but offers users a number of unique hardware and software features. What is interesting about the Taiwanese flagship and is it worth attention?
ASUS ZenFone 6 – Not like everyone else
This year, ASUS decided to stand out and make “not like everyone else.” According to the developers, the new product will compete with the flagship Xiaomi, OnePlus and Google Pixel smartphones. Well, if so, then look at what is hidden in the sleeve of the Taiwanese manufacturer.
ZenFone 6 is equipped with a large display that occupies almost the entire front panel – no cuts, knocks, and holes. The front camera as such is not at all. Instead, the manufacturer has applied a special mechanism that raises the main dual camera – we have not yet encountered such an implementation of such an idea.
The rotary unit is made of liquid metal, which is four times stronger than stainless steel. Vendor promises reliability and durability of such a decision – as long as you have to take the word. When falling, the camera automatically closes, preventing the possibility of breakage. We tested the mechanism: according to subjective sensations, it takes about two seconds to open/close it.

The body materials of the device are standard: metal frame and glass in front and behind. Due to the rounded corners and the curved shape of the lid, it is pleasant to hold the gadget, but for full use with one hand it is too big, even thin frames do not save. The manufacturer tried to minimize the inconvenience by placing the active elements of standard applications in the lower area of the screen.
The fingerprint scanner is located on the back panel, which is probably due to display technology. The module works quickly and accurately, but you still expect a scanner on the screen from the flagship of 2019.
On the right side of the smartphone, there is a power button with a blue border, a volume control swing, and an additional Smart Key button. By default, it serves to launch Google Assistant, but if you wish, you can assign other functions to single, double and long presses. We liked the idea, but this smart key is placed too high, so you have to use your second hand or intercept your smartphone to press it.
By the way, the 3.5-millimeter headphone jack has not gone away, which, together with the presence of the NXP TFA9874 amplifier, should be appreciated by music lovers. Also, the device has loud stereo speakers.
ASUS ZenFone 6 – Display
Speaking of the 6.4-inch screen, the first thing to note is that the IPS-matrix is used here – a rarity in flagships today and joy for opponents of PWM. The display shows a high-quality picture without any distortion when viewed at angles and a large margin of brightness (up to 600 nits). Even the black color is deep and in bright light looks no worse than on OLED-matrices. By the way, in accordance with the trend in the smartphone provides a full black theme.
On the part of the screen, ZenFone 6 can only blame the bottom frame – it is noticeably more than the other three. But in the absence of any cuts, this is excusable and does not cause much discomfort.
ASUS ZenFone 6 – Camera
The ZenFone 6 camera consists of two modules: the main 48-megapixel (Sony IMX586 sensor and lens with f / 1.79 aperture) and an additional 13-megapixel ultra-wide (125 ° viewing angle). The set is standard for 2019, but ASUS still managed to surprise. So, when the phase focus is used eight times as many pixels, due to which the smartphone focuses instantly. This is facilitated by the presence of laser autofocus.
In addition, ASUS has applied the new HDR + Enhanced mode, which is well known to Pixel owners and GCam users. There is also a special mode for night shooting, eliminating light and making the frame brighter. For a wide-angle camera, the vendor has applied real-time distortion (distortion) correction. There is no optical stabilization (as well as a zoom) since so far they have not been able to “pack” all this into a thin module.
When shooting video, you can turn on tracking focus – useful to capture moving objects.
ASUS unusually beat the camera’s pivot design: the user can independently adjust its opening with swipes on the screen, choosing a comfortable angle or creating a panorama in this way.
Since the main camera can be at the same time frontal, all the functions mentioned are also relevant when shooting selfies.
By the way, above you can see how the camera shoots new items.
ASUS ZenFone 6 – Filling and Performance
The smartphone is built on the basis of the top Snapdragon 855 processor with 8 GB of RAM. The filling is powerful, besides ASUS has optimized the firmware, significantly increasing the launch speed of the main applications (such as phone, keyboard, gallery), as well as recent and frequently used programs. For this, machine learning is used to analyze user habits. We have repeatedly heard of this, but in the case of ZenFone 6, applications actually start up almost instantly, especially when reopened.
Out of the box, the device works on Android 9.0 Pie with ZenUI 6 proprietary shell. The interface is as close as possible to pure Android. In addition, the manufacturer has reduced the number of pre-installed applications, which is especially noticeable against the background of previous ASUS smartphones. In addition, ZenFone 6 of those models, which among the first will be an available beta version of Android Q.
Inside the ZenFone 6 fit capacious 5000 mAh battery. The vendor promises two days of active use of the smartphone – be sure to check this application for a full review. We also plan to conduct thorough testing of the camera capabilities in a large photo test.
